Rangoli



Rangoli is the Indian folk art also known as kolam. It is made on the floor at the entrance of the house or living rooms or court yards by using the materials such as flowers and flower petals, colored rice, haldi, colored flour,different colours pulses etc. by creating a design. Rangoli is made on the hindu festive occasion like Diwali, pongal, onam,laxmi punjan, durga puja on navratri and  rangoli designs for competition other hindu festivals. Mentions of Rangoli creation are found in hindu mythology. Rangoli is the tradition coming from the ancient period and have been passed from each generation to next generation. 



Rangoli is the art of making designs and expressing any ideas or story on the floor. The purpose of making decoration with rangoli is to bring the colors of happiness and good luck in our lives. Rangoli is traditionally done by the woman but now a days you find men’s are making good rangoli designs in some houses. Rangoli design can be simple geometric shapes, symmetrical, deity impressions or flowers and petals design depending upon the occasion. 

Rangoli are drawn on the door of the home so that the evil forces attempting to enter the house are repelled. Thus different people in different regions or states have different belief about making the rangoli at their home. It is one of the beliefs that Rangoli is not removed by the sweep or legs but is removed by the fountain of water or by using hands. The basic color for making rangoli is white ( known as ‘Chirodi’) but now a days different colours are available in the market for creating an attractive multi colored designs. 



Rangoli is made on a square grid in North India with gypsum color and on a hexagonal grid on South India with rice flour. Rangolis made on Onam are in the circular shapes with flowers or its petals. Free hand rangoli image is created on the floor with the similar color on both the sides of the design looks very nice. For those who does not like to make rangoli or who are poor in making drawing, “Readymade Rangoli” stickers are found the market, which can make the drawing job easy.

There are modern and traditional rangoli designs. This design are in the abstract form rangoli designs with flowers and usually inspired by the nature. A newer trend of making rangoli involves using cement colors with marble powder. This is a rather precise method but requires some previous training. Beautiful portraits can be drawn using this method.
